COFFEE BREAK - Remembering Matt: A Legacy in Glass

COFFEE BREAK - Remembering Matt: A Legacy in Glass

Here at OHM, we are deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of our dear friend and colleague, Matt, a truly remarkable glass artist who graced our team for over a decade. This isn't just a loss for OHM, but for the entire world of art glass. We want to share Matt's story, his passion, and the incredible legacy he leaves behind.

A Visionary Artist

Matt wasn't just a glass artist; he was a visionary. He poured his heart and soul into his craft, never settling for mediocrity. His signature barrel-shaped bead, now synonymous with OHM, was just the beginning. His unique shapes, like the OHMnigiri and Square beads, pushed boundaries and delighted collectors.

More Than Just Glass

Matt was a character, a true artist who refused to be confined by the mundane. He famously challenged himself with the most intricate designs, often uttering his trademark phrase, "This is too difficult!" But his spirit was never daunted. He thrived on challenges, always striving for artistic perfection.

The Beauty of Inconsistency

Matt followed his heart, not the bottom line. His beautiful glass creations, born from pure inspiration, were cherished for their artistry, even if consistency wasn't always his forte. He brought a messy studio and an unconventional approach, but the result was always breathtaking.

Here's a glimpse into some of Matt's works.

A Life Beyond the Bead

Matt's passion extended far beyond the glassblowing torch. He loved life, from the thrill of fishing to the camaraderie of motorcycle rides. He valued happiness above wealth, content with having enough to pursue his passions. And those passions included sharing his knowledge – there were no secrets in Matt's world.

A Friend, a Challenge, a Legacy

Matt's relationship with his colleagues was as complex and unique as his art. He could be a friend and a nemesis, all within the same breath, but the bond of friendship always remained. He leaves behind not just a void, but an everlasting feeling, a legacy of artistic brilliance woven into every glass bead he created. Most importantly, Matt is survived by his beautiful wife and wonderful boy, who will undoubtedly carry his memory and passion forward.

Matt, you will never be forgotten. Your spirit and your art will forever be a part of the OHM story.

A Final Masterpiece and a Missed Dream

Matt was deeply involved in a very special project for our upcoming OHM Sweet 16 event in Thailand, celebrating our 16th anniversary on August 10-11, 2024. This project involved collaborating with 6 Thai artists, translating their art forms into stunning glass beads. Matt spent over a year meticulously crafting six unique designs, originally planned for 111 pieces with each artist. These beads were his final masterpieces, a testament to his immense talent, passion, and dedication to his craft.

While his passing cut this project short, his incredible contribution will be on display at the OHM Sweet 16 event in Thailand. This is a unique opportunity to witness Matt's talent and the stories woven into these collaborative glass creations. The final number of pieces of each design Matt completed is noted on the Certificate of Authenticity included with every bead. Visit ohmbeads.com/os16 for information about the OHM Sweet 16 event.

A Dream Partially Realized

In a bittersweet twist of fate, the OHM Sweet 16 event was a dream Matt had long held. For over ten years, he meticulously crafted countless beads, each one a treasure for OHM customers around the world. Though he never had much chance to meet customers in person, Matt yearned for the opportunity to connect with the OHM community. The Sweet 16 event was his chance to meet the people who cherished his work. While Matt himself won't be there, his spirit and his art will be on display, a testament to his exceptional talent and a connection that transcends distance.

We hope this blog post captures the essence of Matt and the impact he had on OHM and the art world. His final masterpiece, the Thai artist collaboration, is a fitting tribute to his legacy and a chance for all of us to appreciate his exceptional talent. Though he may not have met his fans in person, the connection between Matt and the OHM community lives on through his beautiful and inspiring glass creations.

Matt's favorite coffee was black coffee on ice.
